then you can try and keep your pet healthy enough to keep the buggers away
I like neem oil myself, safe enough for humans to take internally

Organic Fruits & vegetables?
Our family grows organic fruits and vegetables. We use seeds and partially grown plants (pot plants) from stores like Target, Walmart, and Home Depot. Do those seeds come from gm fruits & veggies?
No. As far as I know there are no GMO plants/seeds sold to home growers. The vast majority of GMO crops are grain crops though mangos, papya, sugar beets are also GMO. You would know you have bought a GMO because you would have to sign a contract saying you would not save any seeds/take and propogate cuttings and also that you would use only approved herbicieds.
But you are likely buying seeds that are owned by Monsanto, the world's largest seller of GMO seed who also now owns about 80% of the global seed stocks. the seedlings you buy have been fertilized with chemicals and likely sprayed several times with pesticides. if you are committed to being organic you should find a local source for your seedlings (or better yet start your own!) that uses organic merthods or is certified organic. Buy seeds from companies that have taken the GMO free "Safe Seed Pledge" such as Fedco (fedcoseeds.com), Baker Creek Seeds (rareseeds.com), Johnny's Selected seeds (johnnysseeds.com) The Seed Savers Exchange (Seedsavers.org). If you buy heirloom or Open pollinated seed you can start saving your own seed which will grow far better for you than any commercial seed and will be truly organic
growing organic berries?
I really want to grow my own organic berries, but I dont know where to get seeds or plants for it. any help? thankx! ๐
rose… what store? they dont sell organic berrie plants/seeds at walmart, so "the store" dosn't really help.
hey amber ๐
it is almost impossible to find certified organic berry plants. I sources some cert organic strawberry plants last year but they cost $10 ea (compared to 250 plants for $65 of conventionally raised plants). These straewberry plants were in california and limited in supply as well.
I make my living growing organically but buying perennial fruit is place where I have had no luck finding certified plants. So i use conventional and figure by the time most produce after 1 or 2 years they are quite organic from the years or organic management they get on my farm.
I would try the following
http://www.localharvest.org
http://www.johnnysseeds.com
http://www.rareseeds.com
You will not find such plants at a box store like Lowe's or Wal-mart.
You don't say what kind of berries but most grow from cuttings, runners, etc and NOT from seed. if they do grow from seed it will be 3 to 5 years before they will fruit.
You might try asking the local organic/sustainable farms in your area if they have any extra plants they have dug up to thin out their berry patches. I know we could have dug up thousands of raspberry plants and in the past have had tens of thousands of strawberry plants to sell from having to thin out an out of control patch.
Organic Gardening Question?
I would love to grow my own organic vegetable garden. What kinds of things or products should I use to fertilize and de-bug? Any other tips? Thanks! ๐
I use chicken manure and cow manure from our farm. I put it on the ground and till the dirt about 10 times before I plant.
I don't use anything to debug or to control weeds. If I see bugs, I pull them off. Once my plants are big enough, I let the chickens control the bugs. I also weed the garden about three times a week.
